Silicon Carbide Industry In China Still Has A Long Way to Go

According to the data from the China Machine Tool & Tool Builders’ Association, by the end of 2012, the global silicon carbide capacity reaches 260 million tons, there are 13 countries whose capacity are more than 10 thousand tons, which occupy 98% of the global capacity. The Chinese silicon carbide capacity reaches 220 million ton, which occupies 84% of the global capacity.

There are more than 200 silicon carbide smelting enterprises in China now, which can produce more than 220 million tons of silicon carbide (including about 120 million tons of green silicon carbide and 100 million black silicon carbide), but the rate of capacity utilization is less than 45% in 2012.

The smelting enterprises mainly locate in Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Sichuan province, which cover about 85% of the total capacity. About one third of the enterprises have got the micro powder production lines. While, the silicon carbide micro powder manufacturing enterprises mainly locate in Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Jilin and Heilongjiang province.

Even though the production techniques, equipment and energy consumption of the silicon carbide smelting industry in China has reached world-class level along with the quality, we still have a lot to catch up and the gaps are mainly the following four aspects. First, large machinery are seldom used in the production line, silicon carbide production per person is relatively low. Second, product quality is not stable enough for the grain and powder products. Third, the properties of some cutting-edge products cannot compare with the similar products in the developed country. Finally, the silicon carbide industry is not environmentally friend enough comparing with the foreign enterprises. Though mastering the techniques of enclosed smelting, which can recycle all the carbon monoxide produced during the process, to make it popular among the whole industry still has a long way to go.
