Generally speaking, grinding wheels that are larger than 125 mm in diameter need to be balanced. That means it needs to make the wheel's center of gravity and its rotation axis overlapped. Unbalance of grinding wheels will cause the vibration in the process of high speed rotating, which will influence processing quality and accuracy of machine tools, and seriously it even causes the damage to the machine and the shatter of grinding wheels. The reasons that cause the imbalance are mainly uneven density of grinding wheel parts, asymmetric geometry and eccentric installation, etc. Therefore, before installing grinding wheels, we need to do grinding wheel balance. And the balance of grinding wheels includes dynamic balance and static balance.
In general, it only needs to do static balance for grinding wheels, but if it needs high speed grinding and cutting (whose speed is greater than 50 m/s) and higher structure degree grinding and cutting, dynamic balance is needed. Static balance device of grinding wheels is illustrated below. Firstly please put grinding wheels with spindle in the balance guide rail of balancing stand, which can make grinding wheel back and forth, until the swing stops. Balanced grinding wheel can be still in any position. If grinding wheels are unbalanced, the heavier parts will always go down. At that time, we can adjust the location of the counterweight for the final balance.
Grinding wheels need the crack inspection with great balance before installing it in the spindle of machine tools, and grinding wheels with cracks are absolutely forbidden to use. It should put an elastic plate bout 0. 5-1 between grinding wheel and the flange, and the diameter of the two flanges must be equal, whose size is usually half the diameter of grinding wheels. There should be a certain gap between grinding wheel and grinding spindle or the flange, in order to avoid the thermal expansion of the spindle.
