At present, there are a lot of emery manufacturers in our country, but the quality and prices of products are very different. Although only several models are commonly used, such as 60 mesh, 80 mesh, 80 mesh, 120 mesh and so on, but different manufacturer has different emery and they still are different on the particle size and dust content. Actually, too much dust and fine particles are the biggest problems of the domestic emery, because the two big problems have great influence on the speed and efficiency of cutting, and too much dust and fine particles will also cause a series of problems such as unable cutting and slow cutting.

Emery also known as silicon carbide (SiC), is made by quartz sand, petroleum coke or coal tar, wood chips as raw material through high temperature smelting in electric resistance furnace. There is also a rare mineral- moissanite in nature, and silicon carbide is also called moissanite. In contemporary C, N, B and other non-oxide refractory high technology raw materials, silicon carbide is the most widely used and the most economic type. It can also be called corundum sand or refractory sand. At present, industrial silicon carbide can be divided into two types: black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, and they are both the hexagonal crystals whose specific gravity is 3.20 ~ 3.25, and microhardness of 2840 ~ 3320 kg/mm2.

There are two commonly used basic varieties about silicon carbide: Green silicon carbide and black silicon carbide. They both belong α-SiC. Black silicon carbide contains SiC about 98.5%, whose toughness is higher than green silicon carbide, mostly used for processing low tensile strength materials, such as glass, ceramics, stone materials, refractory materials, cast iron and nonferrous metal, etc. Green silicon carbide contains SiC about 99 % above, and has good self-sharpening, mostly used for processing hard alloy, titanium alloy and optical glass, and also used for honing cylinder jacket and fine grinding high-speed-steel cutting tools. And there is a kind of Sic called cubic silicon carbide, which is yellow-green crystal made by special process, whose abrasive products are suitable for the superfinishing of bearing, and can make the surface roughness from Ra32 ~ 0.16 microns to Ra0.04 ~ 0.02 microns.
