China's Alumina Imports Fell Obviously in August

According to customs statistics, China's alumina imports were about 129000 tons in August, which fell by 41% from last month, and decreased by 68.3% on year-on-year basis. From January to August, China's alumina imports were 2.027 million tons, which declined 26.6% on year-on-year basis.

In August, China's alumina imports from Australia were about 96000 tons, which ranks the first place, and 28000 tons of alumina imports from Indonesia. This year, from January to August, China's alumina imports were about 1.298 million tons from Australia and 30000 tons of alumina from Indonesia; Indonesia's alumina is transported to Yantai port only supplying Weiqiao. It is expected that alumina imports exceed 100000 tons from Indonesia in September.

China's alumina imports had obvious decline in August. Domestic alumina prices started to rise sharply, and the price of imported alumina had been in a low level, which is difficult to rebound. But because of the short supply of import alumina, the volume to the port in China is still low. In late September, domestic alumina prices were higher than import price of alumina. What’s more, Weiqiao will continue to increase the volume of alumina imports from Indonesia in September, so alumina imports will be increased in the coming months.
